A Sweet Tribute

I didn't know how President Hinckley's passing would hit me. It has been a peaceful feeling knowing that he has moved on to a better place. I knew eventually he would have to leave us but still, it doesn't make it any easier to say goodbye. In many ways I felt like he was my own personal friend, he has guided me since I was 15 through my teenage and adult life. I will miss his eloquent way of expressing the simple truths of the Gospel and his loving and persuasive manner that he calls us to come unto Christ. I love him and will miss him.

Glenn Beck's tribute to President Hinckley on his show Monday brought tears to my eyes and I say amen to his words and add mine to his. Please take a few minutes and listen to his kind words. http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/200/5127/

Stinky Cast (by Luke)

This is what the little guy looked like in his cast a week later. The 2nd diaper is there on top to help hold his 1st diaper underneath in place. He is a little trooper and the way he moves around you hardly notice he has it, except that when he rolls it takes up a little more space. It's only been a week, but that cast sure does stink already.

We said goodbye to Janna's mom last night and welcomed my mom late last night. We sure love having them here and appreciate all of their help with the house and boys. I am back at work today, no longer contagious. I'm not 100% yet, but surviving.

I was surprised to find out today that I am moving to a new project. It comes as a good surprise though as the work here has really slowed down. The job is a 3 story U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Building for the United States Government, and it is actually closer to our house. It will cut my commute in the morning from about 16 minutes down to 8. They just started scratching the dirt on it so I will be able to be there from the start. Unfortunately I am the only engineer on the project, at least for now, so I will be learning a lot as I go. I am going over with the two best guys I work with every day, so that will be helpful. We were going to just be there for a few weeks but now that may be longer. We are probably going to do most of the concrete work, including the flatwork, and that will lengthen our stay to about 40 weeks (10 months). On Friday my Christmas, Anniversary, New Year's, Valentine's, etc. present came in the form of my new custom, hand-built, White's Lace-to-Toe Smokejumper boots. They are work boots and I will be spending about 12 hours a day in them 5-6 days a week, so I had to get the best of the best.

Van's recovery

This is Van before they put the hard cast on his leg.
This is in the recovery room.
At the children's hospital, they have wagons for the kids. Stone wanted to pull Van in the wagon. He is a good big brother.

Diaper changes take a long time. I have to stuff a smaller diaper up under the cast, then put a bigger one over the cast to hold the small diaper on. Luckily, there hasn't been any accidents getting the cast dirty.

Van is in good spirits. The same day we got back from the hospital, he was already rolling and crawling around.

My mom came to help, which is always fun.

We went to the aquarium. There is a kids fun play area. The boys didn't want to leave. We were playing tag because we were the only in there.

Last night we found two teeth breaking through in Van's mouth. As if he wasn't in enough pain already. He is such a good baby. My mom left last night and Luke's mom came last night too. We are very grateful to have such good mothers.

Pile it on

Life keeps getting more fun. Luke woke up Saturday not feeling great. Sunday he was worse and stayed home from church. He went into the Emergency Medical Clinic tonight and they did a throat culture and wouldn't you know it, he has strep throat. Ugh. Elaine is here helping with the boys and Paula is coming Tuesday night to help when Elaine leaves. The timing couldn't be better, especially since Luke's sick days don't roll over. Bring it on.

Rough Day

Ready to go into the ambulance

Overwhelmed In the Ambulance

Entering Primary Children's Hospital

As you may or may not have heard, on Wednesday Van took a wrong turn and rolled down our stairs. I came home from work ASAP and then we took him to the Pediatrician. They couldn't pinpoint what it was so they sent us to the Skyridge ER. They did a catscan of his head and then full body x-rays of his skull, neck, chest, ribs, spine front and side, pelvis, hands, arms, legs, & feet. Van did pretty well except when they had to touch his right leg. He also had an IV in his left arm which he did not like at all because it was all wrapped up and he couldn't use that hand. He kept trying to bite it and pull on it with his other hand. It wasn't very fun as a parent to see your baby in that kind of pain. They brought me (LUKE) in to help with the x-rays. I didn't tell Janna this, but they don't like moms and sometimes parents at all in their because they have to get a good picture of the bone and sometimes that causes a lot of pain. I helped, but it wasn't very fun.

A little while later the doctor came in and said the catscan looked good, no head trauma. He said the x-rays all looked good except for the right leg. He said Van broke his right femur just above the knee. He also said that because the femur is full of marrow, there would be extra swelling and to expect that. He had a trauma doctor that was going to look at the x-rays and then give us the next step. After the trauma surgeon saw the film, they determined that we would need to go to the Children's Hospital for proper treatment. Children's is huge and has Children's Orthopedic Surgeons, and they determined that this type of injury would be better treated there with the right doctors. So they ordered an ambulance, yes an ambulance to mobilize him across town to Aurora. I rode with him in the ambulance while Janna took the boys home to get their PJs on and so she could get stuff to stay for the night.

Another ambulance picture

Once we got to the Children's Hospital I had to fill out more paperwork and they got us a room and then moved us to a different room a little while later. Less than a minute before Janna and the boys walked in, Van decided he was done with his IV and somehow was able to get his finger in there and yank it out. Of course that meant blood got all over and onto his elephant blanket. They had to put another one in of course and Janna said that was probably the hardest part of watching everything. She said he would turn and look at her with this look of "why are you letting them do this to me?" Sad.

They kept him overnight to monitor him and Janna stayed there. They moved him upstairs to a more comfortable room and gave him some narcotics for the pain so he could sleep. Janna was able to get a little bit of sleep too. I had taken the boys home around midnight and I was finally able to sleep around 2am.

They took him into the Operating Room at 7:30am the next morning and had to put him under in order to evaluate the break and be able to set and cast the leg without him moving. That went well they said and only took about 45 minutes. I don't have a good picture of it yet, but he now has a cast that goes around his belly as high as about his nipples, down his waist and down his right leg to the ankle. We had to rent a special car seat for him to use but hopefully we won't have to take him out much. After more observation for a few more hours we were finally able to bring him home around noon.

Headed home with his 2 tired brothers.

That is our adventure for this week. Van is home now and though we want him to rest and let the leg heal, he is already trying to roll over and crawl. Hard to keep the little guy down. He doesn't cry or even whine much, just adapts to his situation and moves on. He has been in pretty good spirits and is laughing when he gets to play with his brothers. Stone laid by him for a few hours after we got home and propped his legs up. The boys are being pretty careful with him.

Van with his Iguana, Rainbow (we didn't pick the name, was on the Beanie Baby tag) given to him by the Ambulance Drivers.

Thanks to everyone who has called, brought food, helped out in any way. Thanks to the grandparents who are pretty worried. Janna's mom Elaine is coming out today to help and my mom next week. You certainly don't expect things like this to happen, but when they do it is comforting to know you are surrounded by family and friends who love you.

P.S. Janna is still moded b/c she has to speak on Sunday. It is inevitable that we both will have to speak eventually and since she already started preparing she is going to go for it. I could have filled in for her but better now than never.

A Mexcellent Christmas

We had a great Christmas. We did the usual Christmas eve things eating a big feast complete with Cholo-mix, opening Christmas eve presents of new pajamas, reading about Christ's birth from the Bible and putting out cookies for Santa. We woke up Christmas morning to a white Christmas and it snowed all day. The boys were so excited as they waited for everything to be ready to go down stairs. Since it was just our little family, we took a break halfway through presents to make it last longer. We ate breakfast of bacon and cinnamon rolls. Van and I took a nap, then we finished opening presents. These are some pictures of our Christmas and the days before.

Stone, Van and Rusty as Christmas presents. Who could ask for anything better?
Van's favorite thing to do was to play with the lights and the Christmas tree. He would crawl over to the lights and look at me and smile as he would grab them. He knows how to get attention.
New Christmas eve pajamas.

Happy Baby!
Christmas morningbefore opening presents.
Van opening a package of diapers. Poor baby, but don't feel too bad for him. He already has tons of clothes and toys as the third boy. Besides, he won't remember, he's just a baby. He also had his first taste of chocolate. He was playing with and unopened little candy bar, and I thought it was ok. Then a little later, I look over at him and he had gotten the wrapper open and was eating a twix bar. Good job, Van!
Rusty and Stone with their new super hero blankets. Made with love by their mother.

Christmas naps.
After the big snow storm on Christmas and one two days later, it made for perfect sledding condititons. We went to a park in our neighborhood with some little hills. They were the perfect size for the kids. I even went with Van a couple of times.
